‘He shouldn’t have been on the pitch’Former Red star says Man Utd player was lucky to be on the pitch vs Aston Villa

Paul Scholes said one Manchester United player was lucky to have been on the pitch against Aston Villa.

On Boxing Day, two goals from Alejandro Garnacho and a late winner from £72million summer signing Rasmus Hojlund saw United complete a dramatic second-half comeback against Villa.

Ten Hag’s men had been booed off at half-time as goals from John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker put Unai Emery’s in-form Villa side in complete control.

But Hojlund’s winner, his first league goal in his 15th Premier League appearance, helped United to a landmark victory.

However, it is thought that Ten Hag had been planning to substitute Hojlund in the second half before his 82nd-minute goal, only to leave him on and replace Marcus Rashford after the latter picked up a knock.

And after the game, Scholes noted that Hojlund was “lucky to be on the pitch” to swipe home his goal.

“He does get a little bit of luck with the goal,” United legend Scholes told Premier League Productions after the game.

“He’s lucky he’s on the pitch. But as Michael [Owen] said, I think it’s always best when you have not been scoring goals, to not have time about it and act on instinct.

“He has no time whatsoever [with the goal]. It happens in a flash of a second. The only thing he is thinking about is the far corner, it’s the only place he can score.

“Look, I’m so happy for the lad. It’s been a tough start to his Premier League career. Hopefully, he can get up and running and score the goals he deserves to score.”

Scholes also singled out both Rashford and midfielder Christian Eriksen for praise following the win.

The ex-United midfielder said: “Tonight they looked a real threat after the first 25 minutes. For the last hour, they looked like they could score goals.

“Marcus Rashford looked a little back to his best. There was a bit more life in him. Alejandro Garnacho got the two goals, and Rasmus Hojlund got a goal.

“You have to remember a lot of these players are young lads and are going to be inconsistent. But now they have to really build on this.

“Christian Eriksen coming back into the team makes a big difference.”

United have risen to sixth in the Premier League table while Aston Villa are rooted in third, having missed the opportunity to move level on points with league leaders Liverpool.

Man United Team News at Crystal Palace: Shaw, Lindelof, Hojlund, Mount

As the fixture congestion ramps up this late summer/early fall, Manchester United are on the mend.

The following trio could be match fit enough to be in line for selection at Crystal Palace at Saturday: Luke Shaw (calf), Rasmus Hojlund (hamstring) and Victor Lindelof (ankle/foot muscle).

Shaw, Hojlund and Lindelof might be in the squad here, or we might have to wait until the 25th.

Next Wednesday (the 25th) is when United hosts Twente in the UEFA Europa League competition. Whomever doesn’t make the squad this weekend will likely be in the team for next midweek.

And with that in mind, you have another injured United troika, Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia and Mason Mount, who are all long-term injury absentees.

Mount is out until early October while Malacia is looking at a late October return.

For Yoro, the schedule has a timeline of a November return.

Man United Starting XI Prediction at Crystal Palace

Manchester United did exactly what they were supposed to do, when they thrashed Barnsley FC 7-0 in midweek League Cup action. That’s exactly what a big, rich club must do to a Championship side. Now they’ll have extra added enthusiasm for when they travel to Crystal Palace on Saturday. This has been a very tricky fixture in recent years for United, especially on the road, so manager Erik ten Hag will take it very seriously.

Onana the Hero: Fans can’t believe what Southampton did seconds before penalty vs Man Utd

Fans were left confused after seeing what Southampton players did before their missed penalty against Manchester United.

The Saints were given an opportunity to take the lead at St Mary’s on 32 minutes after debutant Tyler Dibling was brought down in the area by Diogo Dalot.

Cameron Archer stepped up to take the spot kick, but Andre Onana got down well to his right to keep it out.

United then cleared, and scored themselves just two minutes later through defender Matthijs de Ligt.

It was therefore a nightmare passage of play for Russell Martin’s side as they look to register their first point in the Premier League season.

Marcus Rashford then made it 2-0 before half-time with a curling 25-yard finish with his right foot.

But prior to the missed penalty, fans were surprised at what Southampton chose to do.

Ben Brereton Diaz looked as if he was about to take the penalty, but stepped back and allowed Archer to take it instead.

There was then a significant wait before the penalty was taken, with Archer missing from 12 yards.
