Aaron Rodgers Jokes About Breaking Tom Brady’s Record as Most-Sacked NFL QB Ever after loss to Bills

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers maintained a sense of humor despite getting pulled midway through Sunday’s 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Midway through the third quarter, Rodgers passed Tom Brady to become the most sacked QB in NFL history.

“Yeah, I got Tom on that,” he told reporters after the game.

As much as that was a throwaway joke, Rodgers’ teammates probably weren’t in a lighthearted mood. Sunday was the nadir of an already frustrating campaign, with New York trailing 33-0 when its starting quarterback asked to be subbed out.

The situation raises further doubt on Rodgers’ future with the team. It becomes increasingly harder to see how the partnership can continue into 2025.

Unlike with last year, when Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1, it’s hard to pinpoint one reason why his performance has been so lackluster.

The 41-year-old had been banged up at various points yet hasn’t missed a game. In 16 starts, he has thrown for 3,623 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Unfortunately, the Jets’ run of bad luck continued with a disastrous season that will end without a trip to the playoffs for the 14th straight year.

New York owns the longest active playoff drought in any of the four major North American men’s sports leagues.

Rodgers has acknowledged that his future is uncertain, as he will need to take some time to decide whether he will continue his playing career. If he does, he’s expressed an openness to remaining with the Jets, but the team could choose to cut ties with him and pursue a younger starter in free agency or the 2025 NFL draft.

Between Rodgers taking himself out against Buffalo and the offense immediately looking better with Tyrod Taylor, one can’t help but wonder whether the changeover already starts to happen in Week 18.

AGREED: Why Raiders TE Brock Bowers deserves Offensive Rookie of the Year following Historic Season…

By any measure, Brock Bowers is having a truly historic season. Only four rookies have ever had 100 catches or more in a season. And he topped them all.

The first rookie to ever surpass the 100-catch mark was Anquan Boldin baxk in 2003. He had 101 catches that season. Bowers hit that number in 15 games.

Then it was Jaylen Waddle who, in 2021 set the record at 104 catches. It was broken last season by Puka Nacua, but it took Nacua 17 games to do it. He too had 101 after 16 games.

Bowers has 108 catches in 16 games. A tremendous feat by any measure. It also means taking the Raiders franchise record from Darren Waller is also legit.

That’s to say nothing of him breaking the rookie tight end yards mark that stood for 63 years. Mainly because the other records are tops regardless of positions.

Unfortunately for Bowers, his position is going to be the thing that turns all these records into no additions to his trophy case.

Washington QB Jayden Daniels is so far and away the favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year, BetMGM doesn’t even list it among their odds. And those who do list them still, Bowers is second, but the lines are so sizable, you’d obviously be throwing your money away even placing a bet.

Make no mistake, Daniels is deserving. He’s had a tremendous season, throwing for 3530 yards and rushing for 864 more with 31 combined touchdowns (six rushing) and just nine interceptions. The rushing yards total is a rookie QB record. Breaking the mark set by Robert Griffin III who also won ORoY in 2012.

No matter how many people tout Bowers as their choice for Rookie of the Year, they do so knowing he will go unrecognized among the rookie awards.

Yeah, he’ll be a Pro Bowler. And he may even be an All Pro. He does, after all, lead all NFL tight ends in catches (108) and receiving yards (1144).

The only tight end who might have a case for being selected All Pro over Bowers would be Georgie Kittle who is 65 yards behind him and has four more touchdowns.

And should Bowers land a spot on that team, it would be a big accomplishment and undoubtedly a great honor. But those are not individual awards.

Unlike college, where they have position specific awards — Bowers is the only two-time Mackey Award winner in history — the NFL has only offensive and defensive awards. And the OROY Award ALWAYS goes to either a quarterback, running back, or wide receiver. It has NEVER gone to a tight end.

If there were ever a year for that to change, it would be after the season Bowers is having. But it won’t.

So, enjoy the congrats from your teammates and those balls for the rookie and franchise records you broke this past week, Brock. They are the closest thing to a trophy you’ll receive to recognize your historic season.

Mike Tannenbaum Says Jets Should Trade for J.J. McCarthy amid surprise Aaron Rodgers Rumors

Mike Tannenbaum Says Jets Should Trade for J.J. McCarthy amid surprise Aaron Rodgers Rumors

Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum suggested Wednesday that the Jets should attempt to acquire Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy in a trade during the offseason.

As part of a New Year’s resolutions segment on ESPN’s Get Up, Tannenbaum said the following about the Jets’ quarterback situation and how they could potentially fix it:

“In 2009 Rex Ryan came in, he inherited a former Green Bay Packer legend and he moved on from Brett Favre. … In 2025, move on from Aaron Rodgers. Go get J.J. McCarthy. … He would’ve been the first player picked in this year’s draft and with six of the top 10 teams needing a quarterback, go out and get your quarterback of the future, J.J. McCarthy.”

Minnesota selected McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, but a torn meniscus cost him his entire rookie season, which paved the way for Sam Darnold to start and lead the Vikings to one of the NFL’s best records through 17 weeks at 14-2.

In hopes of ending their lengthy playoff drought, the Jets acquired quarterback Aaron Rodgers in a trade with the Green Bay Packers prior to the 2023 season.

Although he was nearly 40 years old at the time, the Jets were banking on getting one or two more good years out of the four-time NFL MVP and one-time Super Bowl champion.

Instead, Rodgers’ suffered a torn Achilles on the Jets’ first offensive drive of the 2023 regular season, causing him to miss the rest of the year.

He returned in time for the start of the 2024 season, and although his numbers of 3,623 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions aren’t horrible, they have not led to overall team success.

At 4-12 entering Week 18, the Jets have clinched their ninth consecutive losing season and their 14th straight year without a playoff berth, which is the longest active streak in the NFL.

The Jets also fired head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas along the way, meaning they will look to fill those two important positions in the coming weeks.

As far back as November, SNY’s Connor Hughes reported that the organization “prefers to move on from” Rodgers at the end of the 2024 season as well.

Rodgers has one year remaining on his contract, so the Jets would either have to cut him and incur some dead cap or find a trading partner, which could prove difficult. Rodgers could retire and make it easier on the Jets, but it is unclear if he is willing to walk away from football at the age of 41.

As for McCarthy, he led the University of Michigan to an undefeated record and a national championship last season, and the Vikings drafted him in hopes that he could be the new franchise quarterback after the departure of Kirk Cousins in free agency.

Instead, Darnold took the starting job after McCarthy got injured and has enjoyed the best year of his career by far, completing 68.1 percent of his passes for 4,153 yards, 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Darnold only signed a one-year deal with the Vikes, so the 27-year-old is set to cash in big time in free agency.

If Darnold signs elsewhere, it would allow the Vikings to transition to McCarthy, but if the Vikings re-sign Darnold, it would call McCarthy’s future with the organization into question.

Minnesota could always keep both quarterbacks and allow McCarthy to sit and learn behind Darnold for multiple years, much like Rodgers did behind Brett Favre in Green Bay, but the situations are different.

Darnold is much younger than Favre was at the time, and if the Vikings re-sign him, they will likely be making a long-term monetary investment in him as the starter.

That could open the door for a trade involving McCarthy, which would allow the Vikings to pick up some draft capital to be used to improve other areas, and the Jets would be a logical landing spot for McCarthy in that scenario
