Bills HC Shares Grim Update on Injury to Veteran Defensive End

The beleaguered Buffalo Bills defense took another big hit in Sunday’s win over the Miami Dolphins.

Veteran defensive tackle Dawuane Smoot was forced to leave the 30-27 win with a wrist injury, and head coach Sean McDermott announced on Monday that he would need to undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve. Though McDermott held out hope that Smoot might be able to return, the injury is the latest for a Bills team that has already lost several key players for long stretches of the season.

Duane Smoot’s Outlook Uncertain

Smoot has been an important part of the team’s defensive line rotation, starting four games and making 1.5 sacks with 12 total tackles. Smoot also has three tackles for a loss and three quarterback hits, appearing in 48% of the team’s defensive snaps.

McDermott said on Monday that the team wouldn’t know the extent of Smoot’s injury until he underwent surgery.

“Sometimes with IR and surgeries, you’re never sure until the doctors get in there and see what exactly the extent of the injury is or was,” McDermott said.

The Bills already lost start linebacker Matt Milano to a torn pectoral muscle in training camp, with linebacker Terrel Bernard and nickel cornerback Taron Johnson also missing multiple games with injuries this season.

In the end, though, neither kicker secured the spot, as the Packers opted for a different option, choosing Brayden Narveson instead.

Carlson, now 26, soon found a new chance, signing with the San Francisco 49ers last month. The 49ers, facing a shortage of healthy kickers after Jake Moody and Matthew Wright sustained injuries, were in urgent need of reinforcements.

Carlson was elevated twice from the 49ers’ practice squad, playing in Weeks 7 and 8 against the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys. In these appearances, he performed impressively, hitting 5-for-5 on field goals and 3-for-4 on extra points—a significant improvement from his preseason struggles with the Packers.

However, with Moody nearing a return from injury, Carlson will need to seek another opportunity.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the 49ers have released former Green Bay kicker Anders Carlson from their practice squad, filling his spot with veteran safety Tashaun Gibson.

Despite the release, Carlson should have a good chance of finding another team soon, as he performed well in his two games with the 49ers. While Carlson struggled with longer kicks as a rookie in Green Bay, making just 7 of 13 attempts from beyond 40 yards, he showed improvement in San Francisco, hitting 4-for-4 from that range. Although it didn’t work out with the Packers, Carlson’s potential remains promising.

Wiley shared with InsideTheU on Wednesday morning that he has scheduled an official visit with Miami on November 23, aligning with the team’s final home game of the season against Wake Forest.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Wiley is a teammate and close friend of Miami running back commit Girard Pringle Jr., and the two recently visited South Florida together.
