Giants release quarterback Daniel Jones just days after benching him

New York Giants NFL football quarterback Daniel Jones speaks to the media Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, in East Rutherford, N.J.

The Giants quarterback was granted his release on Friday by the team just days after the franchise said it was benching him in favor of third-stringer Tommy DeVito.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him,” Giants president John Mara said in a statement. “We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way.”

Mara added he was “disappointed” at the quick dissolution of the team’s relationship with Jones, who signed a four-year $160 million contract in March 2023 after leading the Giants to a playoff berth.

“We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him,” Mara continued. “We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

The 27-year-old Jones told reporters Thursday that he gave the team everything he had after being taken sixth overall in the 2019 draft and he believes he still has a future in the NFL. He held himself accountable for the Giants (2-8) making the postseason once in his tenure as the starter.

If the Jets don’t want Aaron Rodgers back, the 4-time MVP will find another home: Analysis

The Duke product took over early in his rookie season when then-coach Pat Shurmur benched two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, who was near the end of his career.

Coach Brian Daboll benched Jones on Monday after the Giants returned to practice following a bye week and a 20-17 overtime loss to Carolina in Germany.

Tommy DeVito will start Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with Daboll hoping he can spark the team.

“Definitely not happy about it,” said Jones, who read a 90-second statement before taking questions from reporters. “Yeah, not what you want to hear. So, yeah, all those emotions you have. But at the end of the day, this is football. We’re in a business where you’re expected to get results and we weren’t doing it.”

Jones, who is now free to sign with any team, went 24-44-1 as a starter in New York after being the sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft. A significant portion of those victories came in 2022, when the Giants went 9-7-1 and beat Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs.

Yet whatever forward momentum the club generated in 2022 quickly evaporated in 2023. New York was 1-5 in Jones’ six starts during an injury-marred season and he further regressed this fall.

Jones completed just 63% of his passes with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions even with dynamic rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers at his disposal. The Giants are last in the NFL in scoring and with public sentiment all but gone for the player once known as “Danny Dimes,” Daboll opted to go in another direction while Jones can get a head start on trying to reboot his career elsewhere.

Aaron Rodgers Sends Clear Warning Message on Who Jets next Head Coach should be or……

The New York Jets are in the middle of a search to find their next head coach.

One potential candidate that seems to intrigue quarterback Aaron Rodgers is Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

“The stumble play which was unbelievable. Literally I was watching sitting on the bench they put it up during our game. I was like, they just faked the [expletive] fumble and threw leak for a touchdown. How incredible was that? Pretty incredible. That offense does something crazy every week,” Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, December 23. “They always got different things. I love Jared [Goff], love what they’re doing Really cool play design.”

Interesting…

The play that Rodgers was marveling at came in the Lions versus Chicago Bears game in Week 16.

With 12:24 remaining in the third quarter, Goff snapped the ball from under center, pretended to stumble, Jahmyr Gibbs threw himself to the ground, and several Lions offensive linemen yelled ball [to indicate a fumble occurred on the play and to alert his teammates].

However, all of it was a well-choreographed ruse to fool the defense and create a wide-open play for a touchdown. Goff hit tight end Sam LaPorta for the 21-yard score to go up 34-14.

Johnson is Earning Rave Reviews; Among Candidates for Jets HC Job

“If I was a Bears defensive coach, I would wanna fight Ben Johnson because this was the most disrespectful play call I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” ESPN analyst Mina Kimes said.

Johnson, 38, has been the Lions offensive coordinator since 2022 and he first joined the team back in 2019 as a quality control coach.

The talented coach has earned respect around the league for his offensive creativity and unique play-calling acumen.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini name-dropped Johnson as a “name to watch” in the Jets head coaching search on the “Flight Deck Podcast”

Cimini listed the top three guys at this point in the team’s coaching search are Mike Vrabel, Aaron Glenn, and the aforementioned Johnson.

Woody Johnson has owned the team since 2000. Under his leadership, he has only ever hired one offensive-oriented head coach and that was Adam Gase in 2019. Every other coach has been defensive-minded

Aaron Rodgers sends Blunt warning Message to Jets Teammates Who Are ‘Ready to Get Out

“The reality of the situation is what it is, but…”Aaron Rodgers sends Blunt warning Message to Jets Teammates Who Are ‘Ready to Get Out’

Aaron Rodgers wants his teammates to be focused over the final two weeks of the 2024 NFL season.

After the New York Jets fell to the Los Angeles Rams 19-9, Rodgers met with the media and had a message for anyone on the team who is checked out because the Jets are 4-11.

“The reality of the situation is what it is, but your perspective is something you can change every single day, so what you’re focusing on is the most important thing now,” Rodgers said. “It’s not to change the reality of the situation, being 4-11, out of the playoffs going into an unknown offseason but you’ve got to figure out what it means to be a professional and I think that’s an important part of building culture.”

He continued, “The last two weeks we can really see who’s on board moving forward and who is ready to get out.”

The Jets have struggled mightily this season and have seen head coach Robert Salah and general manager Joe Douglas fired already. Big changes are likely coming in the offseason and Rodgers’s status with the franchise might be one of them.

Through 15 games, Rodgers has completed 62.8% of his passes and thrown for 3,511 yards, with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions. But it hasn’t been enough to carry the Jets to victories consistently.

OVER & OUT: Don’t expect the Saints to quit and go home just because the playoffs are out of reach, following Falcons blow out of Giants, eliminating Saints from playoff contention

The New Orleans Saints started the season on a hot streak. Dennis Allen’s decision to add Klint Kubiak felt like the missing piece for the Saints’ success. But fast forward to Week 16 and New Orleans has been eliminated from the playoff picture.

The Saints needed the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to lose, followed by New Orleans winning against the Green Bay Packers.

Instead, the Falcons demolished the New York Giants with a 34-7 win in Michael Penix Jr.’s debut, and in turn, eliminated the Saints from playoff contention. The outcome of the Buccaneers vs. Dallas Cowboys game is now irrelevant. The NFC South is officially a two-team race.

This is the fourth consecutive year the Saints have missed the playoffs. New Orleans has still yet to make the playoffs since Drew Brees retired. Instead, the Saints have been a bad team in a bad division.

With the playoffs officially off the table, what do the Saints have to play for? Darren Rizzi is still building his case to be the team’s head coach in 2025. A win against the Packers would be the best victory by this team in a couple of years and would certainly bolster Rizzi’s resume. Young players on the roster with a lot to prove like Spencer Rattler, Kendre Miller, Bryan Bresee and Kool-Aid McKinstry want a win on Monday night, too.

Don’t expect the Saints to quit and go home just because the playoffs are out of reach, but the last few years of results haven’t lined up with what general manager Mickey Loomis sold fans and ownership when he hired Allen. This team needs bigger changes.
