Jets Linked to Bargain $1.2 Million QB Option to Replace Aaron Rodgers

New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers reacting ahead of an NFL game.

Aaron Rodgers isn’t long for the New York Jets.

That means the team must find an immediate replacement on the free agent market. ESPN’s Rich Cimini linked the Jets to veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins.

“Kirk Cousins could shake free from the Atlanta Falcons, who have committed to Michael Penix Jr. after the making the switch last season. Cousins is an interesting possibility because his former Vikings GM, Rick Spielman, is now the Jets’ senior football adviser. He’d be cost-effective. The Falcons are on the hook for his $27.5 million base salary (guaranteed), so the Jets would have to pay only the veterans minimum, roughly $1.2 million,” Cimini explained in a column for ESPN.

On Cimini’s “Flight Deck Podcast” he took it a step further predicting that Cousins would become the next Jets quarterback in 2025 for the veteran minimum ($1.2 million).

Rodgers Move Means Jets Have to Be in Cost-Saving Mode

Money isn’t everything, but it is a main thing.

The Jets’ decision to move on from Rodgers will have ripple effects.

“The Jets will need to be in a cap-conscious mode. Releasing or trading Rodgers will result in $49 million in dead cap charges. That can be spread over two years if they designate him as a June 1 cut, which they can execute at the start of the league year [on] March 12,” Cimini said. “Rodgers hasn’t publicly committed to playing football next season, but the cap ramifications will be the same if he retires.”

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter admitted that it is a “real possibility” that the Falcons cut Cousins ahead of the new league year in March.

The Jets could stand to benefit just like the Pittsburgh Steelers did last offseason with Russell Wilson.

The Denver Broncos were stuck with the majority of Wilson’s tab when they cut him which allowed the Steelers to land the veteran quarterback for a major discount.

Cousins Comes With Risks but Jets Have Little Choice

The quarterback options for the Jets in 2025 are scarce.

Cousins, 36, blew out his Achilles in 2023 and performed so poorly this past season that he was benched in favor of a rookie.

The former Michigan State product appeared and started in 14 games. During that run, he completed 66.9% of his passes, threw for 3,508 passing yards, and finished with an 18 touchdown to 16 interception ratio.

However, before his recent struggles, Cousins had been one of the most productive quarterbacks in the NFL since 2015.

Throughout his career, Cousins has put up video game numbers. The four-time Pro Bowler has thrown for 42,979 passing yards, has completed 66.9% of his passes, and has a career 288 touchdown to 126 interception ratio.

From 2015 through 2022, Cousins averaged 29 touchdown passes and 4,263 passing yards per season.

In 2025 Cousins will be another year removed from his Achilles injury and ultra motivated to prove the doubters wrong.

This could be a win-win scenario for both sides. The Jets need a bridge quarterback to get them through next season with no clear long-term answer at the position. While Cousins needs to reestablish his value to the rest of the NFL after a down year.

If things go swimmingly, Cousins can get a bag from one of the other 31 NFL teams in 2026 or re-sign with the Jets.

NEVER AGAIN: Philidaphia Eagle HC Nick Sirianni sends warning message to new Saints HC Kellen Moore after exit from Eagles

Only hours have passed since the Philadelphia Eagles‘ unforgettable 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 2025, but the NFL champions have already lost a key member. Kellen Moore, former offensive coordinator of the team that starred Jalen Hurts, is the new head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Knowing this reality, Nick Sirianni sent a message to the former key member of his staff.

The  Eagles offense was brilliant that season. With Hurts at the helm, Philadelphia became the highest-scoring team in the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl since 1970, with 92 points. Much of that success was due to Moore, who must now be replaced

Moore had joined the Eagles in 2024 and spent one season before accepting the head coaching position with the New Orleans Saints for the 2025 NFL season. Sirianni, who joined Philadelphia in 2021, was not happy with the idea of his former assistant taking members of his staff with him to his new team.

Sirianni’s warning to Moore

“I don’t let that happen, usually. But sometimes you can’t help it. Every situation is a little different. But my general thought on that is, this is my and the Philadelphia Eagles’ staff,” warned Sirianni to Moore, the new coach of the New Orleans Saints, according to NFL insider Zach Berman.

At  the same time, Sirianni compared Moore’s situation to the case of Nick Rallis, who served as the Eagles’ linebackers coach and was hired as the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator in 2023. “It’s hard to build the staff and have that continuity in there, but there’s sometimes you can’t, like the Nick Rallis situation. He had the opportunity to go and be promoted, and that’s the way the rules are now,” he said

What will be Moore’s new coaching staff at the Saints?

There is no indication yet that Moore will bring members of Sirianni’s coaching staff with him to the Saints. However, the Eagles head coach has anticipated that scenario. For his part, the former Philadelphia offensive coordinator will begin his head coaching career at the age of 36 after stints with the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers

BREAKING: Kellen More Shocking Statement to Gayle Benson and NFL Community as New Orleans Saints announce deal with him to become head coach

New Orleans Saints announce agreement with Kellen Moore to become Head Coach 👏 pic.twitter.com/XRFLbwSXTJ

— New Orleans Saints (@Saints) February 11, 2025

It’s official. The New Orleans Saints announced a deal with Kellen Moore to become their new head coach on Tuesday, confirming the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator will remain in the city where he just won a Super Bowl championship.

Moore, 36, was a star quarterback in college at Boise State before he rapidly climbed the ladder in the NFL coaching ranks. He’s called plays for several teams but reached rare heights with the Eagles this season. Now he’ll have an opportunity to build his own roster and show what he can do as the league’s youngest head coach. He’s the nineteenth head coach in team history and their twelfth full-time head coach.

The team released statements from several key members of the organization on this news, starting with words of support from owner Gayle Benson: “At the start of the interview process, it was important to find a head coach who was the right fit for the New Orleans Saints organization. Through the search process, it became clear that Kellen is the right person to help us re-establish a winning program and culture that our fans are accustomed to and have come to expect.”

Benson also thanked interim head coach Darren Rizzi for taking over at midseason and guiding the team through a difficult period; he’s expected to join the Denver Broncos and reunite with Sean Payton as special teams coordinator.

And here’s a message from general manager Mickey Loomis, who led the coaching search and took a moment to welcome Moore to New Orleans: “He is an outstanding communicator with the ability to lead people and has a clear vision for this football team. Through this head coaching search, we had the opportunity to meet with several impressive candidates and I thank them for their hard work and preparation in this process.”

It’s been reported that Moore will have “considerable say” in building his staff, which runs against past rumors that the head coach job was seen as a turnoff because Loomis may insist on keeping certain assistants. More will be empowered to hire his own coaches.

We also got an introductory statement from Moore himself: “I am excited to join the New Orleans Saints and deeply appreciate the faith that Mrs. Benson and the entire Saints organization have placed in me. I look forward to embracing the challenges ahead and am eager to get started. I would also like to thank the Philadelphia Eagles for an incredible 2024 season. I’m excited to begin this new chapter.”

It’s a new era for the Saints. There’s no continuity to their old staff or trying to chase the memories that Sean Payton and Drew Brees made here. This is what they needed after too many years of being stuck in the mud.

GLENN’S SHOCKING DECISIONS:Jet’s new HC Aaron Glenn stuns NFL community with bold decision as he reaches agreement with former team to swap cornerback D.J Reed for Lions’  Top star….…….

Jet’s new HC Aaron Glenn stuns NFL community with bold decision as he reaches agreement with former team to swap cornerback D.J Reed for Lions’  Top star.

In a surprising move, the New York Jets, under new head coach Aaron Glenn, have agreed to trade cornerback D.J. Reed to the Detroit Lions in exchange for quarterback Hendon Hooker. This decision has sent shockwaves through the NFL community, highlighting Glenn’s bold approach to reshaping the Jets’ roster.

The trade involves the Jets sending Reed, a key defensive player, to the Lions. In return, the Jets acquire Hooker, a promising quarterback who has shown potential in his tenure with Detroit. This move is seen as a strategic effort by Glenn to inject new energy into the Jets’ offense.

Concurrently, the Jets have announced the release of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This decision follows a face-to-face meeting between Rodgers and the team, signaling the end of his tenure with New York. Rodgers, who joined the Jets in 2023, faced challenges during his time with the team, including an Achilles injury that curtailed his first season and a subsequent underwhelming performance. The Jets’ decision to part ways with Rodgers is viewed as a move to clear cap space and allow for a fresh start at the quarterback position.

These developments mark a significant shift for the Jets as they aim to rebuild and strengthen their roster. The acquisition of Hooker and the release of Rodgers reflect Glenn’s commitment to making bold decisions to enhance the team’s performance in the upcoming season.

Stafford’s Imminent Departure Paves Way for Rodgers: Rams Ready to Make Splash with Aaron Rodgers

Stafford’s Imminent Departure Paves Way for Rodgers: Rams Ready to Make Splash with Aaron Rodgers

On Monday, the New York Giants made a key hire that could help them land Matthew Stafford in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams this offseason. A quarterback opening in Los Angeles would be a fitting destination for Aaron Rodgers.

Stafford’s future with the Rams is murky due to his contract situation.

The New York Giants could be in play for Matthew Stafford
On Saturday, ESPN‘s Jeremy Fowler suggested the Rams will entertain calls for Stafford this spring.

“People I’ve talked to with the Rams don’t sound overly concerned about Stafford leaving, despite the tricky contract situation,” Fowler wrote. “Last summer’s negotiation wasn’t easy, and this year’s could be even more difficult, considering his status as a top-shelf QB in a league starved for them. Stafford ranked 12th in QBR in 2024 (64.7).

“By all accounts, Stafford was happy with the direction of the offense this season, and multiple people with the team say it doesn’t seem as if changes are coming. But other teams will inevitably call the Rams to gauge trade interest anyway. Stafford will be the top quarterback available if Los Angeles entertains the idea of moving him.”

On Monday, the Giants hired Chad Hall as their assistant quarterbacks coach. ESPN‘s Adam Schefter made sure to note that he’s the brother-in-law of Stafford.

“Giants are hiring former Jaguars and Bills WR coach Chad Hall as their assistant quarterbacks coach, per source,” Schefter wrote. “Hall now reunites with his former Bills colleagues, HC Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen, in New York. Hall also is the brother-in-law of current Rams QB Matthew Stafford.”

Aaron Rodgers to the Los Angeles Rams?
It didn’t take long for fans to propose that Stafford going to New York is a real possibility this offseason. The Rams don’t have a succession plan at quarterback, but fortunately, a QB in New York needs a new home in 2025.

The Jets recently told Rodgers that they plan to release him in March. Rodgers hasn’t stated whether he plans to retire or where he wants to go, but the Rams make sense for several reasons.

Los Angeles made it to the divisional round, and Rodgers would have a chance to play for another playoff center before hanging up his cleats. He could make that push with wide receiver Davante Adams.

Adams wants to play in Los Angeles in 2025. The star wide receiver asked for a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders to the New York Jets so he could reunite with Rodgers. The end result was a 5-12 season, but much of that had to do with ownership.

Rodgers showed flashes of what made the Jets want him in Week 18 when he threw four touchdown passes against the Miami Dolphins. Like Kirk Cousins with the Atlanta Falcons, it appeared the injury from 2023 was a hindrance in 2024.

Rodgers would be a perfect fit in head coach Sean McVay’s system. The Rams should explore that possibility if they trade Stafford.
