Report: Saints star QB situation to turn off top head coach candidate

The New Orleans Saints hiring Kellen Moore to become their new head coach is far from a done deal. The Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator cannot formally accept the job or sign a contract until after Super Bowl LIX, meaning the Saints would have to wait until Feb. 10 to cross the finish line — just like they did last year with offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.

So things could go sideways. Moore could choose to stay on a Super Bowl contender rather than try his luck with the Saints. It’s obvious by now that the Saints aren’t an appealing destination around the league (just look at Aaron Glenn, Joe Brady, and Kliff Kingsbury all choosing to go in other directions). And one aspect that may turn off prospective coaches is the Saints’ outlook at quarterback.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini shared what she’s heard about the situation.

“There was a little scuttlebutt,” Russini said on her Scoop City podcast, “about whether or not Kellen would want this job. And it’s due to the fact they don’t have a quarterback there already in place, that was concerning. With that being said I think he’s come around on it from what I was hearing, ‘Maybe this is the right spot for me.’”

Derek Carr is only one game over .500 as the Saints’ starter, and behind him they have one uninspiring backup in Jake Haener and a winless rookie in Spencer Rattler. Carr is also owed more than $51 million this year due to last season’s restructure and there isn’t a realistic path out of his contract in 2025. This will take time to fix. Russini says that’s partly why Moore and the Saints could actually be a good fit.

“They do (have Carr under contract). But there’s also an understanding throughout the league that the New Orleans Saints need another year to rebuild this thing. They’re in cap hell. And they’re comfortable understanding that. They know their limitations. They’re not expecting Kellen Moore to come in here, let’s just say and get the job, and turn this whole thing around. They know they need someone who’s patient with them,” Russini finished.

The Saints were conservative in free agency last year while working to clear their salary cap books, and that’s likely to be the approach again in 2025. With so many teams craving instant success around the NFL — that shortsighted approach is why Mickey Loomis put the Saints in cap hell, by the way — it’s kind of refreshing to see a path for Moore to take his time and get his own players and coaches in the building. But that path isn’t for everyone, and it’s likely why Russini picked up those rumors of discontent surrounding the Saints head coach search.

REVEALED: Two Saints free agent targets that Head Coach Kellen Moore Must add to boost his team

REVEALED: Two Saints free agent targets that Head Coach Kellen Moore Must add to boost his team

Free agency is less than a month away, and although the New Orleans Saints may not be big players in 2025, there are some available players that would be a great addition to the team. This free agency should be very similar to last year, where the Saints gave a bunch of short-term, cheap contracts so the team can continue to rebuild the cap. Due to the state of the current roster, some additions will need to be made before the draft, so let’s take a look at some of the free agents the Saints can target in 2025.

QB Jameis Winston

Although the Saints might be looking for a starting quarterback in 2025, free agency will probably not be the avenue they go with due to a lack of options and the high cost. Saying this, a new backup quarterback may be important if New Orleans goes with a younger option for next season, and Jamies Winston would be perfect. Already familiar with the Saints organization, Winston would fit right back in even with a new head coach leading the charge.

His leadership and the chemistry he can bring to a locker room could be amazing for a first-year head coach and the development of a young quarterback. If the starter does get injured, he is a great backup option. Winston had the time of his life during Super Bowl week, and although he left the Saints once, his heart could still be in New Orleans.

DE/DT Chauncey Golston

Defensive end is going to be a massive need for the Saints in the offseason. If the Saints transition to a new scheme based around a 3-4 defense, Chauncey Golston would fit into the defense perfectly. He is a great run defender who can play as that 3-4 defensive end or defensive tackle in more of a 4-3 defense. Golston’s pass rush may not be incredible, but after getting 5.5 sacks last season, he proved that he can still make a difference on pass plays.

Contractually, Golston is coming off of the best year of his career so he will get a pay raise, but the Saints should still be able to afford it. At 27 years old, getting Golston on a 3-year deal would be excellent for New Orleans, and it would improve the defensive line going into next season.

NFL insider gives Disheartening update on Taysom Hill’s future with the New Orleans Saints

The future of Taysom Hill with the New Orleans Saints remains unknown. Next season is Hill’s final season under contract with the team. 2026 and 2027 are both void years on his deal, to help with the salary cap hit on an annual basis.

Cutting or trading Hill is on the table, with the prior option seeming more likely if New Orleans moves on from him.

Update on Taysom Hill

According to Ian Rapoport, it is “hard to imagine” that Hill will be back with the Saints next season.

“They have a decision coming on Taysom Hill. Hard to imagine he’d be back in New Orleans, but anything is possible.” — Rapoport via NFL Network

Designating Taysom as a post-June 1st cut would save the Saints $9.7 million this season. With a massive cap hit of just over $18M looming (via Spotrac), moving on may be painful but necessary for New Orleans.

If Hill does get cut by the Saints, it would be no surprised to see the Denver Broncos and Sean Payton get involved to try to bring him in to join their roster.

Keep in mind – Hill suffered a torn ACL in the back half of last season. He’s 35 years old, coming off one of the most serious injuries that can happen to a player with his skillset and role for the Saints.

Seeing Hill wear anything other than black and gold will assuredly be weird for the Saints and their fans, but it may turn into a reality this offseason.

NOT QUALIFIED FOR THE JOB: Analyst blindly takes aim at New Orleans Saints HC Kellen Moore for a ridiculous reason

The offseason is filled with bad takes. There’s an entire Twitter/X account nominated for them.

One of the recent public opinions on New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore is laughable and just, plain disrespectful.

Skip Bayless disrespects Kellen Moore

I’m here to tell you, he’s a nice guy who isn’t remotely qualified to be the Saints’ head coach. I hope I’m wrong for the Saints sake. But all I can say to you after you hosted the Super Bowl New Orleans, good luck with Kellen Moore.”

”Are you kidding me…Kellen Moore? Yeah, he can call plays, but he has zero charisma. Nice guy, but zero personality.”

— Skip Bayless

I mean, do I really need to even break it down? This sort of argument holds no weight and doesn’t even deserve to be listened to on national airwaves. That being said, that’s the reality.

Some coaches, including a young one like Moore, may catch strays that have nothing to do with their actual coaching abilities.

Keep in mind- Nick Sirianni, the head coach who just won a Super Bowl alongside Moore, has been perceived as a “heel” and hard to get along with by plenty of media pundits.

Kevin O’Connell, the latest Coach of the Year award winner, has priorly been seen as a coach who lacks much emotion or drive to push his players forward. Neither of those characteristics were true.

All in all, it is clear that there will be doubt regarding Moore’s abilities, even if those issues do not arise from on-field success or anything a former coach or player of his say. We will see if New Orleans made the smart decision in the coming years.

Breaking: New Orleans Saints Star QB Derek Carr Officially Confirm He Wants To Leave Following Kellen Moore

Breaking: New Orleans Saints Star QB Derek Carr Officially Confirm He Wants To Leave Following Kellen Moore

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has officially confirmed that he wants to leave the team following the hiring of new head coach Kellen Moore. This revelation has sent shockwaves through the Saints organization and fan base, raising questions about the team’s future at the quarterback position.

Carr, who signed a four-year deal with the Saints before the 2023 season, was expected to be the franchise’s leader under center for the foreseeable future. However, with Moore now taking over as head coach, Carr appears to be reconsidering his future in New Orleans. While the exact reasons behind his desire to leave remain unclear, speculation suggests that he may not see eye to eye with Moore’s offensive system or long-term vision for the team.

Throughout his tenure in New Orleans, Carr has been a steady presence at quarterback, but the Saints have struggled to find consistent success. The team failed to make a deep playoff push, and offensive inconsistencies were a recurring issue. With a new coaching staff now in place, Carr may feel that a fresh start elsewhere is the best option for his career.

If Carr does leave, the Saints will have a major decision to make at quarterback. They could turn to a young option already on the roster, explore free agency, or even look to the upcoming NFL Draft for a potential replacement. Regardless of the direction they choose, losing Carr would create significant uncertainty for the franchise heading into the 2025 season.

For now, the Saints organization must decide how to handle Carr’s request. They could work on facilitating a trade to another team, negotiate a contract buyout, or attempt to convince him to stay. His departure would mark yet another transition period for a franchise still seeking long-term stability at quarterback after the retirement of Drew Brees.

As this situation unfolds, Saints fans will be watching closely to see how the front office responds. Carr’s next move will have a major impact on the team’s direction, and whether or not New Orleans can remain competitive in the NFC South.

A BOLD STATEMENT: New Orleans Saints Owner Gayle Benson Has Agreed With Head Coach Kellen Moore On His Decision to Sign New QB After Spencer Rattler’s Disappointment

A BOLD STATEMENT: New Orleans Saints Owner Gayle Benson Has Agreed With Head Coach Kellen Moore On His Decision to Sign New QB After Spencer Rattler’s Disappointment.

In a significant move signaling a shift in the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback strategy, team owner Gayle Benson has publicly endorsed head coach Kellen Moore’s decision to bring in a new signal-caller following Spencer Rattler’s tenure. The announcement comes as the Saints aim to rebuild after a disappointing 2024 season.

A New Direction Under Kellen Moore

After being hired as the Saints’ head coach earlier this month, Moore wasted no time in assessing the team’s weaknesses, with quarterback play emerging as a primary concern. While Spencer Rattler had moments of promise after stepping in for an injured Derek Carr last season, the team ultimately finished with a 5-12 record, prompting leadership to explore fresh options at the position.

“We respect what Spencer has done here, but we believe in making decisions that put this franchise in the best position to succeed,” Moore said in a statement. “Gayle [Benson] has been fully supportive of our vision, and we’re excited about the future of the Saints.”

Who Will Lead the Saints?

The big question now is: who will be the next quarterback of the New Orleans Saints? While specific names have yet to be confirmed, reports suggest that Moore is targeting a player who can execute his fast-paced offensive system—possibly a rising talent from the upcoming NFL Draft or a seasoned veteran through free agency.

Among the rumored options are prospects like LSU’s Jayden Daniels and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, both of whom have drawn interest from teams seeking dynamic quarterbacks. There’s also speculation that the Saints could pursue an experienced signal-caller via trade or free agency, with names like Justin Fields and Kirk Cousins floating in discussions.

Saints Fans Await the Next Move

With Benson’s backing and Moore’s aggressive approach, the Saints appear committed to making bold changes in pursuit of returning to playoff contention. The coming weeks will be crucial as the team evaluates its options and prepares for a major quarterback shake-up.

Who will be the next face of the New Orleans Saints? Fans won’t have to wait long to find out.
