Stephen Jones praises Mike McCarthy for doing an “outstanding” job despite the Cowboys’ injury struggles.

Mike McCarthy’s ability to keep the Dallas Cowboys competitive despite injuries could influence whether the team offers him a contract extension.

“I think he’s done outstanding,” executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said on Wednesday after the NFL’s winter meetings. “I mean, our guys are playing hard and he’s got them competing. That was a tough game the other night, but guys played hard.”

McCarthy, who is in the final year of his contract, helped lead the Cowboys (5-8) to three consecutive 12-win seasons, including two NFC East titles, before things started to go wrong this year.

The Cowboys were 3-5 when Dak Prescott was injured and out for the season. Many defensive players, including star edge rusher Micah Parsons, have also missed multiple games.

“When you’re owning/managing a football team, you look at everything. It would be irresponsible not to,” Jones said about considering the team’s injuries when evaluating McCarthy’s performance. “I know our fans and opponents don’t look at everything, but we do.”

Parsons’ return helped the team win two straight games, but Dallas lost 27-20 at home to Cincinnati on Monday night due to a critical mistake on special teams after a blocked punt.

The Cowboys have had four heavy losses and have lost four games by just one score.

“Hats off to Mike,” Jones said. “When you look around the league, sometimes you see a lot of teams that start like that and they’re thinking about next year. And Mike’s got everybody focused on winning each and every game.”

Under McCarthy, the Cowboys haven’t had playoff success, going 1-3. They were beaten badly by Green Bay in the wild-card round of last season’s playoffs, but owner Jerry Jones made few changes to the roster.

When asked if a decision about McCarthy’s future had been made, Stephen Jones said: “We’re talking about the next game.”

When asked if Bill Belichick was ever considered, Jones replied: “We’re worried about the next game.”

NOT ON MY WATCH: Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Under Fire for Rejecting African American Coach Aaron Glenn for Head Role, Putting NFL Community-Oriented Diversity Efforts in..

In a move that has ignited widespread criticism, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is facing backlash for reportedly rejecting African American coach Aaron Glenn as a candidate for the team’s head coach position. The decision has sparked renewed scrutiny of the NFL’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, particularly in leadership roles.

Aaron Glenn, a highly respected coach and former Pro Bowl cornerback, has built a reputation as a skilled defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions. His track record of success and leadership made him a strong contender for head coaching roles across the league. However, sources close to the Cowboys organization suggest that Jones declined to seriously consider Glenn for the position, opting instead to pursue other candidates.

Public Reaction and Outcry
The decision has drawn sharp criticism from fans, analysts, and civil rights advocates who have called for greater diversity in NFL leadership. “This isn’t just about one team—it’s about a systemic issue in the league,” said Dr. Richard Spencer, a sports equity advocate. “By overlooking qualified African American candidates like Aaron Glenn, Jerry Jones is reinforcing barriers that have existed for far too long.”

The NFL has long faced scrutiny over its lack of diversity among head coaches. Despite implementing initiatives like the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview minority candidates for top positions, the league continues to grapple with underrepresentation of African Americans in coaching and executive roles.

Jones’ History Under the Spotlight
Jerry Jones, one of the most influential and outspoken owners in the NFL, has been criticized in the past for his approach to diversity. While the Cowboys have historically been seen as a pioneering franchise in some respects, Jones’ reluctance to hire an African American head coach has led to questions about his commitment to fostering inclusivity.

Implications for the NFL
This controversy comes at a critical time for the league, which has made strides in promoting diversity through programs like the Quarterback Coaching Summit and the Diversity Advisory Committee. However, incidents like this raise concerns about whether these efforts are yielding meaningful change or merely serving as public relations gestures.

Calls for Accountability
Fans and advocacy groups are now demanding accountability from Jones and the Cowboys organization. Social media platforms have been flooded with calls for transparency in the team’s hiring process, with the hashtag #DiversityInNFL trending nationwide.

Aaron Glenn has not publicly commented on the situation, but his exclusion from the Cowboys’ coaching search has only amplified the ongoing conversation about racial inequities in professional sports.

As the NFL prepares for another season, the league finds itself at a crossroads. Will it take stronger measures to ensure diversity in leadership, or will incidents like this continue to undermine its stated goals? For now, all eyes remain on Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, with many wondering if this latest controversy will lead to meaningful change—or more of the same.

Mike McCarthy Plot Twist Completely Changes Jets Search

Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy reacting in the middle of an NFL game.
Mike McCarthy’s run as the Dallas Cowboys head coach is over.

NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero shared the news on social media saying, “The sides couldn’t agree on [the] length of [the] contract and McCarthy will pursue other opportunities.”

Insider Nick Underhill said he expects the New Orleans Saints to be “very interested” in McCarthy if he were to become available and now he is.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini said on X previously Twitter that the New York Jets and the Saints “are thought to be Aaron Glenn’s preferred destinations (he has ties to both franchises).”

The Jets Have a Clear Path to Landing Glenn as Their Next HC
NFL Insider Josina Anderson spoke with a league source who said the feeling is the Jets and Saints “are going to end up battling it out over #Lions DC Aaron Glenn.”

If New Orleans goes the McCarthy route that leaves Glenn potentially available for the taking.

McCarthy was with the Saints from 2000 through 2004 as their offensive coordinator.

Glenn spent eight of his 15 NFL seasons with the Jets. Plus an additional two years after his playing career serving in the scouting department.

Glenn also has ties to the Saints. The last year of his long playing career was spent on the Saints in 2008. He also served as the defensive backs coach for New Orleans from 2016 through 2020.

Should McCarthy Enter The Jets HC Conversation?
While McCarthy’s entrance into the NFL coaching carousel has opened the Glenn door perhaps it has opened another.

Should the Jets consider bringing McCarthy to New York?

During the 2019 coaching cycle, the Jets interviewed McCarthy for the head coaching position. Ultimately they hired Adam Gase instead and he ended up being one of the worst coaches in franchise history.

McCarthy is an experienced NFL head coach. He has a 174-112-2 record in his 18 seasons running a program.

He served for 13 years with the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers. Most recently he has spent the last five years with the Cowboys.

With the Packers, McCarthy went 125-77, won a Super Bowl, won six NFC North titles, and made nine playoff appearances.

McCarthy had three straight 12-win seasons with the Cowboys from 2021 through 2023. The Jets in their history have only ever had one 12-win season which transpired in 1998. That is the most wins they have ever had in a single season.

The Jets are expected to make at least one hire at either head coach or general manager who has had prior experience in that role. McCarthy would certainly check that box.

One of the big questions for the Jets this offseason is what to do with Rodgers. McCarthy is not only someone who has worked with Rodgers before but they won a world championship together.

The “Enigma” Netflix documentary revealed that Rodgers and McCarthy have a really good current relationship.

Perhaps the Jets could bring in McCarthy, run it back one more time with Rodgers, and see if they can make another chase as a contender.

A compelling twist in a wild coaching carousel in the NFL in 2025.

Mike McCarthy’s contract with the Dallas Cowboys is set to expire in less than a week, on Jan. 14. Without a new deal in place, the Cowboys have operated as if they will bring McCarthy back and stay put at head coach.

On Tuesday, the Cowboys denied a request from the Chicago Bears to interview McCarthy for their head coaching vacancy. Now one day later, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that talks between McCarthy and the Cowboys are ongoing, a sign they want to continue to work together.

“What is actually happening is they are in constant communication yesterday, the day before,” Rapoport said on The Insiders on Wednesday. “Lengthy meetings today McCarthy had with Stephen and Jerry Jones to my understanding, really trying to figure out where the organization goes from here and how they move forward.

“Now, if you’re not going to bring back Mike McCarthy, you’re not going to have those meetings, right, and you wouldn’t turn down the Bears’ request.”

Rapoport went on to note that to his understanding, the two parties are currently in discussions on the number of years that would be included in a new deal. To Rapoport, it sounds like McCarthy and the Cowboys “want to be together, but they’re just not there yet.”

McCarthy has coached the Cowboys since 2020. He is 49–35 in five seasons with three playoff appearances. And recent events indicate he’ll stay in Dallas even longer.
