Trade Rumors Surrounding Ex-Lions QB Matthew Stafford Get Major Update

Trade Rumors Surrounding Ex-Lions QB Matthew Stafford Get Major Update
Matthew Stafford #9 of the Los Angeles Rams speaks with head coach Sean McVay before a game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford landed with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021 through one of the biggest trades the NFL has seen in recent memory.
It appears it could take another blockbuster to get him out of L.A.
There has been growing speculation about Stafford’s future with the Rams. The team has put All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp up on the trade block, with many insiders predicting Stafford could be available as well. But Fox Sports insider Jordan Schultz reported this week that the Rams are likely holding onto Stafford — unless another team is willing to pay a very high price.
Rams Head Coach Wants Matthew Stafford to Stay
Schultz reported that league sources are “adamant” that Rams head coach Sean McVay and the organization want to keep the 37-year-old Stafford in Los Angeles. It was McVay who spearheaded the 2021 trade that shipped Jared Goff to Detroit and Stafford to Los Angeles, a move that paid dividends the next season when Stafford led the Rams to a Super Bowl win.
Several teams have inquired with the Rams about Stafford’s availability, Schultz reported, with the asking price set at a first-round pick. With other veteran quarterbacks likely available at a lower cost, Schultz predicted Stafford would be back with the Rams in 2025.
“Again, the Rams want him back (he also carries a $49.3 million cap hit if released) and there’s been nothing to this point that would suggest Stafford doesn’t want to play for them, but this is undoubtedly one of the biggest storylines heading into free agency next month. Before then, the Rams and Stafford’s agent are planning to meet in Indianapolis to see if they can find common ground.”
Rams Face Decision on Paying Matthew Stafford
Schultz added that Stafford wants a new deal if he remains in Los Angeles, which would come with a big price tag.
“Remember, trading Stafford ensures a $45.3 million dead cap hit in 2025 and nearly $23 million in 2026,” Schultz reported. “Stafford, who is scheduled to make under $30 million this upcoming season, is seeking a new contract with future guarantees that will pay him closer to the league’s top 10 quarterbacks.”
While the Rams and Stafford are expected to hold talks on a new contract, The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue reported that the team is reluctant to sink too much money into the 37-year-old quarterback.
“If there is a difference between Stafford and the Rams, it would likely be this: The Rams don’t want to make a significant financial commitment to a veteran quarterback whose long-term future or durability they can’t be certain about, and a youthful roster built through the draft is now their core identity,” Rodrigue wrote.
But Rodrigue added that the Rams have undergone a quick rebuild after their Super Bowl run, reshaping a team once filled with aging veterans into one built around young stars. Stafford could end up being the perfect fit to lead another Super Bowl run, he wrote.
“There are two truths: Eventually, the Rams need to secure a long-term quarterback who will grow with the roster and won’t prohibit them from paying their first- and second-year stars when those extensions are due (plus whoever comes next at quarterback),” Rodrigue wrote. “But also, their roster is ready to win earlier than many expected, so why wouldn’t they plug back in their elite quarterback and make another run?”

The Detroit Lions community was left stunned after a surprising message from the NFL regarding star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. Owner Sheila Ford Hamp addressed the situation, expressing her thoughts on the unexpected development.
Hutchinson, a key player in the Lions’ defensive lineup, has been a cornerstone of the team’s recent resurgence. However, recent league-wide discussions have raised concerns over his future, prompting an emotional response from Ford Hamp.
“I was shocked to hear some of the things being said,” Ford Hamp stated. “Aidan is not only an exceptional talent but also an incredible leader for this team. What he brings to the locker room and to the field is invaluable.”
While the exact nature of the message from the NFL remains undisclosed, speculation has run rampant among analysts and fans. Some believe it could be related to officiating controversies involving Hutchinson, while others suggest trade rumors or contract concerns may be at play.
Hutchinson, who was drafted second overall in 2022, has been a dominant force on the field, recording double-digit sacks and establishing himself as one of the premier pass rushers in the league. His passion and commitment to Detroit have made him a fan favorite, and any suggestion of uncertainty surrounding his status has only fueled emotions among Lions supporters.
The Lions organization has not released an official statement beyond Ford Hamp’s comments, but insiders suggest the team remains committed to building around Hutchinson as a franchise cornerstone.
As the NFL world waits for more clarity on the situation, one thing is certain: Detroit and its fans stand firmly behind their star defender.

Lions Get Disappointing News as Offseason Continues

Lions Get Disappointing News as Offseason Continues
The Detroit Lions have their work cut out for them in the offseason, as their coaching and front office staff is taking shape.
The Detroit Lions are going to look a lot different next season, and significant changes are already taking place. The team announced their new roster of coaches on Wednesday, February 19, and they’re already moving full speed ahead when it comes to putting together their staff, including the coaches and front office staff.
But, on Wednesday, the team also suffered another setback in the form of another key staffer leaving the team.
Another Key Staffer Leaves for College Sports
Earlier this week, the Detroit Lions’ director of scouting advancement, took a position as the general manager of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Then, ton Wednesday, reports surfaced that Jon Dykema, the Lions’ director of football compliance and lead football counsel, would be taking a position as the executive senior associate AD/student-athlete management and assistant general counsel at Michigan State University. Under his new role, Dykema will take on negotiating and managing contracts for Michigan State Athletics.
The report came from ESPN expert and analyst Pete Thamel, who sent out a post with the news on X.
MSU confirmed the news in a release, stating that in this new position, “Dykema will play a pivotal role in drafting, managing and negotiating contracts for Athletics, including, but not limited to, contracts related to sponsorships; commercial partnerships; name, image and likeness (NIL) activities; media rights and employee contracts.”
The statement from MSU adds that, “Among his many duties with the Lions, Dykema oversaw all legal aspects of the football operation for the club, and assisted the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Director of Football Administration with the management of the salary cap.”
Dykema has been with the Lions for an impressive 15 years. He joined the franchise in 2011 as staff counsel. He’s also a Michigan State University graduate, which means he’ll fit right in with the green and white.
Jon Dykema’s Time With the Detroit Lions
Even though Dykema isn’t a household name, so to speak, he has done a lot behind the scenes for the team during his time in Detroit.
“Over the last four years, Dykema has been tasked with overseeing the legal aspects of the Lions’ football operations, negotiating player contracts, helping with salary cap planning and management, etc.,” noted Jovan Alford of Detroit Jock City in a February 19 feature. “All those things are very important to a football team and that’s not even everything that Dykema does.”
Connor Earegood of The Detroit News points out that, “With revenue sharing beginning this upcoming season, the college landscape looks more and more like the professional ranks,” which is partly why we’re seeing NFL staffers go into college athletics.
“That could and likely will include contracts for student athletes to govern that revenue share, a new development athletics departments around the country have to contend with,” Earegood added. “For Michigan State, it feels it has hired someone who can assist in navigating a period of immense change.”
The Detroit Lions finished the 2024 season with a pristine record of 15-2 but lost early in the playoffs to the Washington Commanders, ending their hopes of making it to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.

SHOCKING UPDATE: Lions HC Dan Campbell Have An Interesting and Encouraging News Of Myles Garrett Trade – “Perfect Solution’ to Roster Problem”

SHOCKING UPDATE: Lions HC Dan Campbell Have An Interesting and Encouraging News Of Myles Garrett Trade – “Perfect Solution’ to Roster Problem”
At the moment, the Cleveland Browns are much more likely to keep DE Myles Garrett than trade him. That doesn’t mean things won’t change, especially since the NFL combine begins next week. A Garrett deal would result in a large return, but perhaps not as much as Browns supporters would prefer.
There have been other proposed Garrett trade plans, but the most of them appear to miss the mark altogether. With the salary cap consequences and the team’s roster, Cleveland must be blown away before making a deal.
Browns Star Myles Garrett Named Trade Target to Replace DPOY Frontrunner
The Detroit Lions are an obvious team that should contact the Browns to try to work out a deal, but nothing will match the insane proposal made on ESPN near last year’s NFL trade deadline. According to Lions Wire, USA Today’s coverage of Detroit’s club, Jeff Risdon proposed a reasonable trade proposal that falls short of many fans’ expectations.
Simply put, Cleveland receives two first-round picks, goes up two rounds (from fifth to third this year), then drops one round (2nd to third) in 2026. Martin was drafted in the third round in 2023, although he has only appeared in five games across two seasons.

The main difficulty with the Lions’ proposition is where their picks are and where they are expected to land. Both first-round picks are more likely to be in the second round rather than the top 10, especially with Garrett joining Aidan Hutchinson as he returns from injury.
The 28th and 32nd picks are poor returns for a top-tier pass rusher in the NFL, but they provide the Browns with enough ammunition to rapidly become competitive.

Lions Told to Not Extend Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams Contracts

Lions Told to Not Extend Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams Contracts
In the wacky NFL offseason, the Detroit Lions are being told to avoid working out deals with Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams.
As the NFL offseason ramps up, so does the talk about which Detroit Lions may be cutting a deal to stay in the Motor City for the long haul. Among the most prized Lions possessions up for a contract renewal are edge Aidan Hutchinson and wide receiver Jameson Williams. Both had impressive seasons with the Lions, even though Hutchinson was out after Week 6 due to a broken left fibula.
Now, Detroit is being urged not to extend both Hutchinson and Williams’ contracts for now.
Lions Advised to Go for Kerby Joseph
In a February 13 feature for A to Z Sports, NFL analyst and expert Mike Payton urges the Detroit Lions to give safety Kerby Joseph a deal during the offseason and not Hutchinson or Williams.
Before you get too hot-headed about this pick, note that Payton says some of this has to do with timing. He notes that Detroit picked up both Hutchinson and Williams as first-round draft picks, so they’re both eligible for fifth-year options. That means Detroit is able to do their deals next year.
Payton adds that the Lions dealt with “a near season-long injury with Hutchinson and a suspension with Williams,” so “the likelihood is that both players are probably going to want to wait until next year anyway.”
“That way they can have a good season and maximize their profits,” Payton stated. “Right now the Lions would not be offering them top-dollar based on those factors.”
So, those are some reasons to wait on inking a new deal with Hutchinson and Williams. As for moving on Joseph, Payton notes that the safety had a stellar, All-Pro season “that saw him get votes for Defensive Player of the Year, as well.” He adds that the Lions could do with Joseph what they did when working out Penei Sewell, Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown‘s contracts during the last offseason: get “ahead of the market.”
As a side note, Payton adds that Baltimore Ravens all-pro Kyle Hamilton is up for an extension this season and that many analysts and experts think he’ll be the “highest-paid safety” in the NFL. That means if the Lions act quickly and finish a deal with Joseph before Hamilton signs, they could save some money.
As for the stats, Jameson Williams had 58 catches for 1001 yards and scored an impressive eight touchdowns in 15 games in 2024. Hutchinson had 7.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss and 45 quarterback pressures, but was out after Week 6. Joseph had nine interceptions in 2024 alone.
Detroit Lions’ Super Bowl Window
It’s early to think about the Super Bowl for next year, but on February 14, Bucky Brooks of NFL.com ranked the teams he believes have the best chance to get there next season. He has the Lions at No. 2, only behind the Philadelphia Eagles. Well, la-di-da.
While he notes that losing offensive coordinator Ben Johnson “could take away some of the Lions’ trademark pizzazz on offense,” what could help is “the re-emergence of a healthy and destructive defense under new coordinator Kelvin Sheppard,” which “could enable the team to roll through the NFC with a blue-collar approach that would serve it well in the postseason.” He adds that if Hutchinson and Alim McNeill are back in full form, even better.
