Tottenham Hotspur fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw in their first game since Ryan Mason replaced Cristian Stellini as interim manager.

Manchester United had looked set to inflict a third straight defeat on Spurs after first-half goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

The half-time whistle was greeted with a chorus of boos and jeers as things threatened to turn ugly.

But Tottenham were much better in the second period and rallied to earn a deserved point thanks to strikes by Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min.

Though the comeback helped to lift the mood around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the result did little to boost fading hopes that Champions League football will be played here next season.

Fifth-place Spurs remain six points behind United, who still have two games in hand. Meanwhile, Newcastle are eight points above Spurs after winning 4-1 at Everton elsewhere on Thursday.

Erik ten Hag’s side now have just three days in which to pick themselves up from the shattering defeat before facing fierce rivals Liverpool on Super Sunday.

Mikel Arteta’s team needed to score first having been 1-0 down from the first leg and a second would have made life very difficult for the North London club to progress.
