Manchester City ended Bayern Munich’s perfect record in this season’s Champions League by thrashing the German side in the first leg of their quarter-final.

Bayern had won all eight of their previous matches during the current European campaign, beating PSG, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen home and away.

But goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland emphatically consigned Bayern to their first UCL loss since they went out to Villarreal in last season’s quarter-finals.

Rodri stunned Bayern by scoring his first ever Champions League goal in the 27th minute when he let fly with a swerving left-footed strike from 23 yards.

City’s second goal arrived in the 70th minute after Bayern fell victim to City’s high press

Jack Grealish dispossessed Dayot Upamecano before backheeling a pass into the path of Haaland. As Haaland got into the penalty area, many expected him to shoot but instead he chipped a brilliant cross towards Silva, who headed in his fifth club goal of the season.

Haaland did shoot seven minutes later to make it 3-0 with a close-range volley after being set up by John Stones.

That was Haaland’s 45th goal of the season for City, making 2022/23 officially the most prolific campaign of his career so far.

City could have won by an even wider margin but Bayern keeper Yann Sommer pulled off six saves.

Sommer was both brilliant and erratic. His showreel of saves came after he had come very close to being embarrassed by Haaland, who almost tackled him on his own goal-line during the first half.

The second leg will take place in Munich next Wednesday (April 19).

Video: Moment of magic from Martin Odegaard leads to Arsenal opener

Arsenal have opened the scoring in their huge Champions League match with FC Porto as the Gunners level the tie at 1-1.

Mikel Arteta’s team needed to score first having been 1-0 down from the first leg and a second would have made life very difficult for the North London club to progress.

That came just before halftime when some beautiful footwork from Martin Odegaard led to the Norweigan playing in Leandro Trossard.

The Belgian star remained composed and finished clinically as Arsenal will now turn up the heat in search of a second.
