Man Utd have had a good start to the transfer window and Erik ten Hag is pleased with the business done so far, but wants more additions.
Erik ten Hag praised the new football structure at Old Trafford for their proactive approach to transfers, insisting that is ‘what clubs like Manchester United should do’.
United have wrapped up deals for Joshua Zirkzee (£35.7m) and Leny Yoro (£58.9m) already in the transfer window and Ten Hag is pleased to see the structure put in place by Ineos ‘on the front foot’.
The deals for Zirkzee and Yoro have solved the two priority positions for the summer, with the latter making his first appearance for the club in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Rangers in Murrayfield. Those transfers have been secured under Ineos, with Dan Ashworth in as sporting director, Jason Wilcox as technical director and Christopher Vivell as interim head of recruitment.

United are now in a position where they need to sell to raise funds, with Ten Hag admitting that is a balancing act as he wants a deeper squad this season to deal with an increase in games, with the Europa League group stage now two matches longer. He also wants more quality in the squad and United are continuing to pursue Matthijs de Ligt, while Manuel Ugarte and Martin Zubimendi are two options for a central midfield role.
Another centre-back and a midfielder are likely additions this summer, with one player in those areas likely to be sold. A full-back could also be pursued if Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaves the club, with Premier League interest in the former Crystal Palace right-back.
“Competition, yes, we need quality players. But you also need quantity because the season is even tougher than last season so we have to be ready for that,” said Ten Hag.
“That [we need to sell] is also obvious but we want to have a strong squad, as strong as possible. I think at the moment the football leadership is very on the front foot. I think that’s what clubs like Manchester United should do.
We’re very pleased we’ve done business – we have Yoro in, we have Zirkzee in – two high potential assets for the future. But when I say future, the future also starts today. The next game is always the most important, next season is always the most important.”
The deals concluded so far show an emphasis on youth, with 23-year-old Zirkzee and Yoro only 18, although the teenager looked ready to play a prominent role in his 45-minute appearance at Murrayfield. Ten Hag was pleased with his performance after just one training session with his new teammates and sent a message to United’s more experienced centre-halves that he believes the youngster is ready to play a key role at the heart of defence this season.
“He’s here, we think he can play but there’s so many games to come that he’ll be in a group of four or five,” he said.
“I think for the first time, after just one training [session], it’s a very mature performance. That’s what we saw when we scouted him. It’s great to have him. He’s a very young, talented centre-back and there’s a lot to come.”

Matthijs de Ligt has sent an indirect message to the Manchester United hierarchy amid uncertainty about Erik ten Hag’s status as manager. De Ligt reunited with Ten Hag at Old Trafford in the summer and appears to have made it clear that he would prefer to continue working with the Dutchman.
He is no stranger to experiencing a coaching change across his spells at Ajax, Juventus and Bayern Munich, and Ineos could enforce the latest as early as next week.
Ten Hag is under severe pressure, having overseen just three wins in United’s opening 10 matches of the season after a largely woeful second campaign.
A poor result in Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa could prove fatal, with patience among the fanbase on the brink of collapse.
United bosses are scheduled to meet in London less than 48 hours after the Premier League clash at Villa Park, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Joel Glazer among the planned attendees.
But De Ligt has publicly suggested that he would prefer the club to stick with Ten Hag so he can enjoy a longer-term relationship with one of his coaches.
“To be fair, it’s quite funny because in my career, I’ve never had a trainer for longer than one and a half seasons,” De Ligt told Sky Sports.
“So this is something that I hope I can have now, that I have a trainer or a manager who stays longer with me as a player so you can grow more together also.”
De Ligt has featured more under Ten Hag than any other manager in his career, being selected 78 times at Ajax and United.
The next highest totals belong to Thomas Tuchel and Massimiliano Allegri, but at just 42, it’s easy to see why the 25-year-old is seeking stability.
United would likely prefer to retain faith in Ten Hag after concluding a search for a worthy replacement in the summer by extending his contract by one year until 2026.
Ratcliffe also sanctioned around £200million in transfers to bolster the Dutchman’s squad, including the £43m deal for De Ligt.
However, a failure to win at Villa could leave United as many as nine points adrift of the top four and closer to rock-bottom than the Champions League spots.
A fourth defeat in seven league games could make Ten Hag’s position untenable and leave De Ligt temporarily coach-less again.
The centre-back’s status may also be in doubt after a dismal showing at Porto on Thursday, with last-gasp hero Harry Maguire knocking on the door.

He trained on Friday and should feature at some point against Villa. However, we’re going to opt for more protection by starting Casemiro alongside Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes is available after United successfully appealed his three-match domestic ban due to a wrongful dismissal against Tottenham.
The front three will consist of Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford. Hojlund got back on the scoresheet against Porto and will be hungry to add to his tally.
