Real Madrid cruised into the quarterfinals of the Champions League as they beat Liverpool 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu to win the last-16 tie 6-2 on aggregate.
Having done much of the hard work in handing out a come-from-behind thrashing in the first leg at Anfield, the 14-time winners did not need to be at their best in the return fixture.
But they impressed in largely managing Liverpool’s threat, ensuring the visitors did not receive unnecessary encouragement in their bid for a comeback in the form of an opening goal.
And a mature second-leg performance was capped off late in the day when Karim Benzema tapped into an empty net from close range to send his side into the last eight in style.

Cole Palmer scored in the 100th and 101st minute as Chelsea secured an epic and extraordinary 4-3 win against Manchester United.
Man Utd were leading in this game at 99 minutes and 17 seconds – the latest a side has ever led in a Premier League match they have gone on to lose. It is also the second time in less than a week that Man Utd have lost a lead in added time.
Erik ten Hag’s side now have just three days in which to pick themselves up from the shattering defeat before facing fierce rivals Liverpool on Super Sunday.

This early strike from the champions deals a significant blow to Liverpool, who will now have to come back from behind to grab anything from this match.
